Fantastic Mr Fox

The weather today has been fabulous though we have been stuck inside with paint brushes glued to our hands finishing (no, really) decorating the front room downstairs. There was a brief hiatus, however, when Owen let the cat out of the bathroom window and spotted this fox merrily foraging for food in the neighbour’s garden.

Foraging fox

We stood and watched him for about 20 minutes in the middle of the day. He’s a pretty healthy specimen, I’d say, though I’m no expert on vulpine physiology. Most of all, it was just delightful to watch him. I tried to take some pictures with my new lens (which is truly wonderful), but as he was so very far away and I still have a lot to learn about using this lovely lens, they’re not brilliant. I may not have got Mr Fox in focus, but you’ll notice that the very large bramble in the left of the picture is beautifully sharp. Comparatively.

They have become most shameless in their diurnal urban lifestyle, haven’t they? I recently drove past an enormous, healthy and beautiful fox sitting on the pavement of my local high street outside an estate agent. It was broad daylight and several people walked right past him. He didn’t bat an eyelid.

I was once woken at 2am in Walsall by a fox (well, 2 to be precise) screaming out in orgasmic joy. To them it ssounded like: “YEEEESSSSS! I LOVES YA BABY!!!!!!”

To me it was more like someone forcably faxing a bag of cats and I damn near messed the bed in fear.

Soilman - That sounds brilliant. Mind you, he was probably attracted by the wolves inside the extate agent…

Burro boy - Watch what you write. I almost sprayed half-chewed chocolate muffin all over my screen! THe foxes round here make that kind of noise too. Blood-curdling.

    Hello!
Am delighted to find out that you’ve got a potage project just like me.

Did you give up your allotment or are you trying to do both?
I have given up mine and it’s so nice to have a 30 second commute to the veg garden. Although I’m still waiting to actually plant anything yet, I’ve got a ton of plants waiting in the wings.

    We should compare notes!

mtp - Yes, the allotment is no more. We officially ended our residence in October but had effectively left it from about June. I’m chomping at the bit to get stuff in the ground, but I think I might be struggling to get my head around the smaller scale. Far too many potatoes and onions and garlic and not enough room for anything much else. But yes, so much nicer just to be able to pop outside rathert han trek doen the street.
