A staple
My autumn onion sets arrived this week and I spent part of a lovely sunny afternoon planting them out in one of the prepared beds.
I have filled the bed set aside for them and still have about half the sets left which will now go in with my winter salads, planted close together. this means that they will stay small so I’ll pull them while they are immature and they can be used like spring onions.

I’ve planted my onions too but I’m thinking of planting more. It’s better than bare earth over winter and there’s only so many broad beans you can eat, isn’t there? And like you say, when I want the space again in spring I can always pull them up as spring onions.

Lucky you… Mine are probably stuck in a sorting office somewhere waiting for the strike to end. It was my plan to plant them this weekend but I guess a week later won’t make a big difference!

Mel - You’re right that it makes more sense than having bare earth, but my one worry is that I will end up with a glut of spring onions when I have to clear a patch for something else and I won’t know what to do with them. Spring onion buns, anybody?
Pepette - Sorry to hear your onions are ‘in transit’. At least they should be OK, it’s not as though they are seeedlings stuck in a sorting office somewhere. But yeah, still plenty of time to plant them out when they do eventually arrive.
