Slated

The 1.5 tonnes of slate chips that will mulch the paths in the soon-to-be-started potager have arrived.

Slate chips

There are cheaper ways of creating paths that keep the weeds back, look good, are low-maintenance and long-lasting. I hunted around and found what I believe is the best price for the amount of slate we need, from a firm which allows us the flexibilty to order that additional half tonne amount (you have no idea how much searching that took!).

Still, cost was only one consideration. Part of the point of the Potager Project is to create something in the garden that we like the look of both when we’re walking around in it and when we see it from the upstairs windows of the house. Slate chips are certainly attractive. Besides, we wanted to avoid gravel as we have found that it gets walked into the house too easily and also the cat likes to use it as a toilet.

Cross your fingers that I have correctly calculated the area of the paths otherwise I might soon be selling some on!

That’s a lot of wheelbarrow loads! This weekend is going to be very tiring. Still, I need the exercise… ;)

    Happy Bank Holiday Barrowing!

My advice ( for what little it’s worth) is DO NOT under any circumstances skimp on the weed proof membrane. If there’s one thing worse than weeds growing through your path in a year’s time, it’s when they are growing though several tonnes of slate you can’t move without a seizure!

    Noted! Seems like sound advice.

I second that, Greenmantle. And I’ll be looking into doing the same I think - can’t be arsed laying bricks again :)
