Who was that masked musician?
Today is Daniel and Melanie’s big day. They are getting married in this church, before hot-footing it here where our wonderful quartet will serenade them and their guests at a champagne reception for two whole hours. As the theme of the wedding is ‘Masquerade Ball’ we will be wearing masks while we play.
This is no mean feat, I can tell you. We have been rehearsing in the masks (we’re nothing if not professional) and although our mouths and noses are unencumbered, it’s not until you plonk a papier mache second skin onto your phizog that you realise how many muscles all over your face you use when playing an instrument and how suddenly stiff and encumbered you feel with something so alien perched on your nose. I suspect we will either have to remove the masks after 10 minutes of playing or make sure we have plenty of that champagne to keep us relaxed and loose.
In which case we will need the masks to protect our identities when we make a load of drunken mistakes.
And no, I don’t think any of us will be wearing our underwear over our tights.

I hope you all had a wonderful day, despite the ghastly weather. And I hope you noticed at least some of the wonderful Norman-ness of the church, which is one of the most beautiful in the country. I once went to a lecture there about its architecture, given by a now-retired history don who filled every room in which he ever lectured, and who is the only person ever to have made me even slightly interested in medieval and/or ecclesiastical history. He swept his arms about as he explained the various parts of the church, and hundreds of heads turned simultaneously.
And I hope the singing went well!

Hi Joanna. Yes, the weather was disgusting, but didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits - just hemlines. The church was amazing. I particularly liked the carved birds’ heads around the doorway. Gorgeous.
