National Allotments Week

This is National Allotments Week. How do I know this? An article in the national press? No. Parades, floats and public announcements up and down the country? Nah. A streaker running around Birmingham waving a banner, perhaps? No, siree. Steve Wright mentioned it yesterday , but other than that I have come across no coverage whatsoever of any events associated with the week.

Given that the aim of NAW is to “promote awareness of allotment gardening both locally and nationally”, I’d say that there’s still a way to go. In fairness, as I haven’t been down to our allotment in - ahem - months, it is possible that there is something going on there to mark the occasion, but I suspect not. Even if there is, I’m not sure that raising awareness among those of us who already have allotments (however badly cared for) is quite in keeping with the stated aims of the campaign. Still, it is only the start of the week so there is time for them to pull a few surprises out of the potting shed.

The most embarassing thing about this post? Not the length of time I have neglected my allotment, but the fact that I’ve just admitted I listen to Radio 2.

I only know about National Allotment Week because I read about it on the TopVeg website.
I wouldn’t worry about listening to radio 2 my husband is in his early 30s and listens to radio 4!!!

Hi Sara - Again preaching to the converted by the sounds of things! Plus, I listen to Radio 4 as well. I may as well hang up my sexy shoes now and reconcile myself to being a total fuddy-duddy!

I’m late 20s and have listened to Radio 2 for years. It clearly has the best and broadest music selection!

Although Steve Wright is not in my favourite djs list…

Martian77 - He’s not on mine either (I prefer Wogan - what am I saying??), but what else can you do when you’re ironing at 2:30pm on a weekday?

Hi, I stumbled across your blog.
I am an allotment holder in the midlands, and I have been tryin to find out all about events etc this week, and nothing is being done.

I don’t think allotment awareness has been promoted at all.
