Pumpkin Soup

a weblog with an allotment attached

Come hell or high water

It’s been quiet chez Pumpkin, hasn’t it? No allotmenting, no P’Souping, no regaling you with cheery stories about how good it is to see the sun shining finally. We’ve been filling our time with rehearsals, rehearsals and more rehearsals as the first wedding we are playing at is now less than a fortnight away. Still, all this musicianship has left little time for thinking about the Potager Project - until now.

Whatever else happens over the bank holiday weekend, we will be spending our time hoiking up grass, digging, levelling and raking, before marking out where the raised beds will go, building the raised beds, putting the little shed together and covering the paths. Maybe I’m being ambitious, but I mean it. Sun, rain, hail, tornado - none can stop us. I’m sick of feeling envious of people with nice gardens and of not having anything to eat that I’ve grown myself.

Now I just have to source some good, well-rotted manure or perhaps some spent mushroom compost, as well as some slate chips for the paths and we’ll be all set.

Ooooooooh! Well you are committed now I shall be back from my holiday on the 3rd Sept and will be dropping by to check on your progress, slate chippings sound lovely my pottager beds have been in place for 7 years now but still not raised and separated by grass paths that are a challenge to maintain, hubby keeps insisting on digging although I am winning him over now with my “no dig” sucesses.

Keep posting, playing, composting etc - Pumkin Soup is a nice place to visit with my morning coffee.

Hi Helen - Thanks for your lovely comment and the encouragement. Our raised beds are planned to be no dig, but there might be some occasional digging as I do quite like a little bit of it every now and then. Nothing back-breaking you understand, just something to make me feel like I’ve worked hard.

    Have a lovely holiday!
