Thank you note.
My long-awaited Christmas present was a new camera, the cost of which was contributed to hugely by friends and family, with additional financial support courtesy of my tax refund and a dip into the savings. I surprised myself last year by discovering a hitherto unexercised love of taking pictures of pretty much anything that catches my eye and decided that I quite fancied exploring this photography lark a bit further.
If this kind of attitude sounds in any way familiar then you should perhaps revisit the ‘about’ page on this site - my decision to take on the allotment was made with the same kind of ‘oh-well-whyever-not’ lack of thinking through.
Still, I am very much enjoying experimenting with the new equipment and setting myself small photography projects as a way of learning more about how the bloody thing works! More pictures from the current project - ‘Flowers on black’ can be seen here. I’ve got a lot to learn but I’m having fun and keeping out of trouble. (I don’t imagine the keeping out of trouble bit is going to last very long)
Many thanks to all of you who bought me this lovely gift.

You’re very welcome! It’s great to see you getting to grips with the new camera and beginning to explore its potential. I think people are going to start to visit P’Soup for the photos as well as your not-remotely-related-to-the-allotment posts and the mad-as-a-tangent comments threads.
And my ascerbic wit, good looks and charm of course. Betcha can’t photograph that…

Have been looking at your “flowers on black” series on Flickr…they are really rather good. (I was in the pro-photolab insdustry for 13years and I don’t impress easily!). What camera have you got?…I’m promising myself a new Nikon D80 whenI can afford it. Meanwhile I slog away at photoshop, trying to learn technologically, what I used to do so easily in a darkroom…is that progress? I’m not sure.

Thanks Greenmantle, that’s praise indeed. Especially since I haven’t yet had as much chance to work on this project as there’s so little halfway decent light at the moment.
The new camera is a Canon 400D - I made a nuisance of myself in camera shops for a few months last year playing about with different models and asking the kinds of questions that only complete novices can come up with and I’m pretty pleased with it so far.
Learning photoshop is another good few steps on for me. It must be pretty frustrating having to learn a new way of achieving something that came easily before. What you said reminds me of when I started to learn the piano - 10 years after I started ot play the flute. With the flute I could pick it up and play pretty much anything reasonably well almost straightaway, but I would have to practise for hours and hours on the piano before I could even play something as simple as three blind mice. I found it unbelievably frustrating.
I really hope you have better luck with photoshop than I did with the piano!
