Box of goodies
While I was at work today, my wonderful gardening assistant took delivery of a parcel for me. He was a bit confused as the box claimed to contain an oval casserole dish and he was pretty sure that I had not ordered one. How right he was.
What Owen had failed to consider was that the nice people at the Organic Gardening Catalogue gain extra green brownie points (Can you have brownie points that are green? Would they not just turn a murkier shade of brown?) by recycling previously used boxes. Or perhaps, they’re just trying to spare their customers’ “Oh no! I ordered more seed! What will my husband / girlfriend / live-in-lover / toyboy say?” blushes. I quite like this idea. The staff of the OGC know that many organic gardeners are seed buying addicts and that while this is not a shameful activity, it is one that is frowned upon in circles where compost is not discussed in tones of awe and wonder. I like the idea that they might be trying to save me some embarassment.
All of which is a roundabout way of saying that we have taken delivery of our first batch of seed potatoes - Cara. All 3kg of them. These are now the first of what will be many, many, many seed potatoes chitting on our windowsills, because in a truly stupendous display of Irish heritage I have managed to order something like three times the amount I had last year. And I had way too many then.
Can I interest anyone in some chips?

MMM… spuds. Must check my recently delivered seed potatoes … like you, I always order way too many, especially when I rarely get to the end of my stock before the last few sprout/go soft …

I know - we don’t always get through ours either. I don’t mind giving them away though. It’s nice to have something that is generally so easy to plant and get decent results.

At least packets of seeds will keep in a cool dark place for another year, but you can’t really store seed potatoes that long.

True enough! Mind you, it would help if I had checked through my existing box of seed before ordering more. I now find I have four packets of parsnips and two and a half packets of golden apple squash.
I must remember that my memory’s no good…

Mmm. Yes, please. I’ll have some chips.

Swipe me, how glitterin’! Look at that funky box you’re in!

Eh?

Is it potato chitting time already? My boyfriend (who is a botanist and garden centre plant area manager) has not informed me of this. I rely on his knowledge. I planned only to do spuds and beans/peas this year as I didn’t have time to look after my veg last year properly and I can envisage a similar senario this year. Also my veg patch is quite small and is enclosed in concrete and paving so it could do with a spud year for the soil I think.
I can’t remember how I linked here but I’m glad I did - your blog is very easy to read. As Arnie said ‘I’ll be back’.

Ooh, you won! I nominated you for a Blog of the Day award and you won. You can put the code on your blog to show everyone (a bit like having an Oscar on your mantelpiece). I’m thrilled for you.

TopChamp - Welcome! It’s always lovely to have comments from new visitors. You’ve still got loads of time for potato chitting, especially as you’re in Scotland - I imagine the spuds will go in the ground a bit later than down here.
Mel - How lovely of you. Thank you. Any more awards and I shall become insufferably smug!

I’d like to say that all these awards are because of the fantastic design, but on the Web content is king…

That’s very sweet. But it’s nice to have a lovely wrapper nonetheless.
