Resolver

I’m not much of one for new year resolutions. The resolving bit I can manage, it’s the doing it at new year I’m not so good at. I’m pretty much a setting new goals, fresh start, turn over a new leaf kind of person in small ways most of the year round. Still, this January I find myself feeling uncharacteristically in a resolving state of mind (I don’t think Billy Joel ever sang about that one though) and so present you - in no particular order - with a list of some of the things I would like to work on this year:

  • Make more of an effort at keeping in touch with and seeing friends and family who are not local. Given that most of my friends and family live so far away in order to see and hear less of me, this could come as a bit of a shock to them.
  • Become more accepting of the fact that I have only limited time to spend at the allotment and to remember that I’m doing it for fun so perhaps I don’t have to feel quite so guilty if I don’t spend eight hours out of every day digging. Seven-and-a-half are quite enough.
  • Take better care of my skin - I’m no spring chicken.
  • Face my fear of growing brassicas. I have no problem eating them, it’s their cultivation that is a difficulty for me.
  • Buy less shoes. It turns out there are only so many pairs of Mary-Janes that a girl needs and I’m starting to find that being introduced as ‘the Imelda Marcos of the Midlands’ is unflattering in so many ways.
  • Try to feel more zen towards slugs and snails as they have a right to be here too. Tough one that. Especially the slugs.

Naturally, there are plenty of other things I should probably give some attention to, but a ridiculously long list will put me off trying before I even start.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to moisturise.

Good luck with those. The trick is to keep trying. Often people stick to their resolutions for a week or two then fall off the wagon and say “Oh darn, I blew it again, just like I always do” then revert to their old behaviour until Jan 1st 2008. Instead they should say “Oops! I forgot. Never mind, I’ve remembered now, let’s keep going”.

Thank you. I’m pretty persistent when I want to be (or ’stubborn’, which might be a more accurate desciption!) - it’s the getting motivated in the first place I have problems with. One day at a time.

Speaking as one of the “distant” relatives I hope you manage to keep your resolution. Already looking forward to a visit in February and a trip to the Globe Theatre for some Shakespeare in the summer. Keep up the good work!

    Much love,

    Dad.

Hi Dad! Blimey - you were one of the people I thought I already saw quite a bit of! Still, it’ll be nice to come down to see you in Basingstoke and I think the Globe will be fun too. Plus we have to all think of a date for “Team Warstock - the replay”. I bet you can’t wait, can you?
