…new something…
I’m feeling listless and a bit fed up. Unsure where my heart is and my passions lie. Not in the love-life area of life (muchos passion there), you understand, more the bread-winning part of life.
All suggestions gratefully received.

It’s going to be a non-allotment weekend as I’m off to Nottingham tomorrow for a girls’ weekend involving culture and cocktails with my friends Viv, Flip and Vanessa. Viv is most notable for being the person who on New Year’s Eve helped me to discover why you should never leave two women wearing tight […]

We made a visit to the plot today and pootled around preparing a trench in the broad bean bed and pulling up weeds in what I think might become a bed for peas. The weather was sunny and frosty but really lovely so in theory we could have worked hard and come home feeling […]

My Red Epicure seeds arrived last week - and very exciting they look too. According to the packet they “have a taste [Unwins] consider to be unequalled.” This bodes well for when I come to eat them, but does mean that I’m probably too excited to wait before I plant them. If you’re a […]

Those of you who are regular readers will know that I’m really something of a horticultural novice. My fingers aren’t green so much as a murky brown. I’m much more likely to kill rather than cultivate the plants under my supervision and what success we have had has been largely down to a […]

Today we visited the allotment for the first time since October. We were a little anxious about how awful it might be when we got there, and certainly the recent winds had wreaked havoc with last year’s bean frame, but other than that there was much to gladden the heart.
All of our garlic is […]

My long-awaited Christmas present was a new camera, the cost of which was contributed to hugely by friends and family, with additional financial support courtesy of my tax refund and a dip into the savings. I surprised myself last year by discovering a hitherto unexercised love of taking pictures of pretty much anything that […]

It’s blustery and blowy and wet and miserable outside, but my narcissus tete-a-tete think it’s spring already. They’re braver than I am. I agree that it’s mild for January but not so warm that I want to venture out in it. I still want to hibernate.

I’ve overdone the food and drink this Christmas. But at least my knees don’t look like this any more.

While I was at work today, my wonderful gardening assistant took delivery of a parcel for me. He was a bit confused as the box claimed to contain an oval casserole dish and he was pretty sure that I had not ordered one. How right he was.
What Owen had failed to consider was […]

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am a very busy person - they would be right. Take one look at our new calendar and you will see that we have no free weekends until April. April! Ask that same person and they will also tell you that I am […]

I’ve been G.N.O.M.E.d!
Thank you, Gnome - you’re a gentleman, a scholar and an acrobat. No hold on, that’s the Pink Panther. Still, you’re a gentleman and we’re delighted that you like the new look so much.

I have been tagged! It would seem churlish not to participate so here are five things most people don’t know about me. They might not be true.
I am one of a rare breed. Back when I was a civil servant, I organised a piss-up in a brewery - and let’s face it, there […]

My first year at the allotment I was very surprised by a crop of broad beans that turned out to be exquisite. So delicious were they that I even honoured them with a Pumpkin Soup award.
Last year I was determined to grow even more so that I could once again savour their delightful taste, […]

I’m not much of one for new year resolutions. The resolving bit I can manage, it’s the doing it at new year I’m not so good at. I’m pretty much a setting new goals, fresh start, turn over a new leaf kind of person in small ways most of the year round. […]

I’m supposed to be working, but I am waiting very impatiently for my Christmas present to arrive and it is therefore very difficult to concentrate. Every time I hear a car or van on the street I rush to the window to see if I’m about to have a parcel brought to my door.
No […]
