Pumpkin Soup

a weblog with an allotment attached

One step beyond!

As predicted, the weather yesterday was very, very wet. Fortunately, my friends are resiliant, hardworking and loyal (or just plain mad) so we braved the torrential rain and were later rewarded with sunshine. This is us at the end of our five hour stint - we’re pretty much dried out by this point, and as you can see, spirits are high (eating chocolate cake while dripping wet will do that for you).

I now owe a lot of people a share of future produce. In the meantime I want to say the biggest thank you to them all for being such brilliant friends and for helping us to get more done in one day than we would have managed on our own all summer.

You can see photgraphic evidence of our madness and the fruits of our labours here.

hi just found your blog and spent the last hour having a beer and reading of your allotment tales

i have been thinking of applying for one as the gardens here in billesley are to small to grow anything but tomatoes and the missus just wants flowers in the garden (been trying to tell her that alloments are the new rock and roll)

so do you know if there are any spare plots up there in warstock would appricete if you could let me know

all the best for the growing season

Hi Pappy - Glad you dropped by, and even gladder that you had beer while reading the site. It should be compulsory.

We do have plenty of spare plots at the Warstock Lane site so you would be very welcome. Most days Ben, our site secretary, is down there with the gates open, so you can pop in and say hello. He can show you round and let you choose a plot. We’re gradually getting more people in, so the place is starting to look more active and I know Ben is hoping to arrange activities like a barbecue later in the summer and perhaps even a vegetable show.

Most of the plots are untended, but that does mean that we are all under a lot less pressure to keep everything pristine and can make mistakes. A lot of the newbies are cultivating small parts of their plots to start with.

Do come down and have a look around. It’s always great to see new faces down there - I hope to see you soon.

All my friends are now scattered around the country, but I may attempt a mini-barn raising event (replacing ‘barn’ with ‘raised beds’) later on this year - I’ll have a think and a plan… ;-)

Sandwiches and chocolate cake, that’s what you need. Maybe a beer or two.
