24 April 2006
We returned on Friday from our lovely holiday in Lucca and have been down the allotment every day since so far. Alas, after today that will stop as it’s back to train journeys and long working days for me.
Still, we are feeling optimistic and quite confident at the moment, not to mention buoyed by the fact that our little plot is actually staring to look as though we mean business. Vegetable growing business, rather than abandonment and neglect business.
Our broad beans are coming along just nicely so I am filled with excitement at the prospect of tender, sweet beans in the summer. And Owen smiles nervously at me thinking of just how farty they will make me.
As is to be expected, perhaps, we didn’t get everything on the list done before we went away and so we are behind with a lot of jobs. But, we did pick up some bricks from our neighbour so another part of the plot is now covered in plastic. Most of the potatoes are planted - a job that I hope to complete this evening. And we are making steady progress on the asparagus bed.
Now, if someone could just arrange it so that I could have more time off work, that would be just perfect.

Hi Al. Thanks for the compliment about my healthy knees. I thought they were slender rather than broad!
