Drip, drip, drop little April showers…
(or, just who exactly is in charge around here anyway?)
In a misguided attempt to meet the diverse weather preferences of Owen and I, mother nature today gave us strong winds and heavy showers. This actually pleases neither of us, so more likely it was a way of humbling us (because losing an entire batch of sweetcorn seedlings to a ridiculously late frost in June - yes, June - is clearly not humbling enough or we would have packed up and gone home already). Either way, our resilience was eventually rewarded with this gorgeous double rainbow. Being hard core enough to carry on working outside in yuck weather and getting to enjoy a spectacle of nature? I feel very smug, I can tell you.
We have so far not been able to get hold of our neighbour, so covering the remaining rotovated part of the plot has had to go on hold for the time being. Instead of this, we had loads of fun (for which read ‘near violent conflict’) drawing up a plan and dividing the plot into beds (about which there will be more in another post, to follow soon). We have marked out five of the beds (with funky pink string) which will take some of the potatoes and onions. Already I feel as though we might actually be making our plot more manageable, but I suppose that remains to be seen.
Also, there is surprising news from the broad bean bed - we have germination! It turns out that the mice didn’t get their mucky little paws on all of them. There are definitely a few gaps, but my reserves should fill those in.
So that’s one less job to do before we go away, and more time for holiday shoe shopping. Because there are some needs that mother nature can’t meet.

I’d almost forgotten how tiring digging is, it’s been a such a while since we made new beds. And that double rainbow was great.

Look at the size of your plot! yet again I’m incredibly jealous. Although I must admit, it does look like an awful lot of digging. And it’s good news about your broad beans too.
