(belated) Peace and pumpkin soup

It had been my plan to write this post for January 1st, and it has been sitting in my ‘drafts’ for months now. Ah, the best laid plans and all that.

While surfing earlier in the year, looking for recipes to try I discovered that in Haiti pumpkin soup (a very rich and meaty version, so apologies to veggies…) is traditionally served on New Year’s Day to mark their independence. You can find the recipe and the shocking story of the bloody and violent struggle to achieve that independence here at the fabulous SoupSong site. I rather like the idea of soup - and especially pumpkin soup - signifying peace and hope and optimism. It seems just right.

So, let me wish all visitors here, regular or just passing through, a peaceful, hopeful and optimistic 2006.
