A cry for help

It’s really late. I should be in bed as I have to get up at 5:45am in order to catch a train to Bristol for a day full of meetings.
Meetings usually make me want to tear off my knickers, wave them in the air and run around the room shouting “I’m a pumpkin! I’m [...]

Size matters

I’m feeling decidedly inadequate regarding my lack of allotment activity. I know that time and weather have been against me a bit, never mind whatever personal obstacles I might have put in the way. But I’m starting to get anxious about what we haven’t done…
I know, I know, it’s important just to do [...]

It takes courage and stamina to think about frozen dessert on a day like today

It’s the most amazing day here today. Blinding sunshine, still air and freezing cold beyond belief. Well, OK, it’s not actually that cold according to the thermometer (about 7 degrees), but it feels like death. And the garden has the thickest layer of frost I have ever seen. During a break [...]

No man is an island, but one woman is an allotment, apparently

In my work meaning and symbolism are everything. We consider people’s relationship with their external world to reflect something of their inner world and so the internal experience can be understood through the metaphor of the external. Still with me?
Well, for example, a person who accidentally drops a plate that shatters might unconsciously [...]

Sunshine dreams on grey days

I am having a slow day at work.
After the last few weeks of frantic stress, you would think that I would relish a bit of peace and quiet, wouldn’t you? But I work in a broom cupboard on a Friday. A broom cupboard with a corking view of a brick wall. And [...]

Another glorious digging day passes…

…with nary a clod turned.
I have onions, garlic and broad beans screaming to be put in the ground and I’ve been nowhere near the plot in a ridiculous amount of time. Dark evenings, long working days and outrageously rainy weekends have not exactly made it easy.
Cross your fingers that it stays dry on Saturday.

Frell!

Sorry. Came over all Farscape there.
So much for my much wished-for early night. I’ve just spent the evening toiling over a hot keyboard trying to get a load of teaching prep done for tomorrow. As usual, it’s taken me much longer than I would have liked. And much longer than is usually [...]

And again - Ouch!

But this time because I’ve banged my head, resulting in a not-very-fetching lump on my brow.
Thank you in advance for your sympathy and kind words. Comments of the ‘maybe it’ll knock some sense into you’ variety, however, are a whole lot less welcome.

Picture perfect

A very brief post after the world’s longest working day (well, maybe not - I’m not a junior doctor, after all) followed by a sojourn in the pub (we didn’t win, but we managed to avoid the crap wine prize - trust me, this is an achievement!).
The college building where I am working in Leicester [...]
