Andiamo a Firenze per capodanno
At last! We have a holiday booked! New Year in Florence.
Good food, fantastic wine, beautiful surroundings, great company, a chance to practise my ropey Italian and the opportunity to experience strange new customs, as my Italian teacher tells me that it is considered buona fortuna in Italy to wear red underwear at new year.
Well, it sure beats singing Auld Lang Syne, doesn’t it?

Lucky undergardener, that’s what I say. I may try and convince the mistress of the house that such a tradition is also popular in our part of Lancashire - wish me luck
