Rain stops play

It’s all go here. At least, it was until the very heavy shower that started five minutes ago and sent me scurrying inside.

It’s hard to scurry while wearing purple clogs, I can tell you.

I’ve had a very busy few days at work and I’m shattered, so rather than take the nap that my body is telling me I could really do with, I’ve been taking it easy in the garden. A spot of weeding, some tying up, a bit of pinching out and the inevitable snail picking. All very satisfying. My Blauhilde beans are starting to develop pods and the other beans are all starting to flower prolifically. The courgettes are flowering too, although they are a mixed bunch (and far superior to Coldplay, I might add!). Two plants are really going for it and are getting huge, while some of the others, having fallen victim to a little stem nibbling are struggling gamely on but look a bit feeble in comparison.

I also took delivery today of 1kg of extra worms for my wormery. Fantastic. And they didn’t make my stomach turn at all. But don’t go getting ideas - I am not ready to recive a kilo of spiders through the post just yet.

Work on the dog poo deterrent is underway. When I got home the monstrous honeysuckle that was masquerading as a fence had been cut back and the silver birch between our gardens had been removed. I am always saddened when a tree is cut down, it seems wrong to me. But it does make our tiny garden feel much bigger and there are plenty of other mature trees in neighbouring gardens so all is not lost.

And I treated myself to a huge number of bedding plants as an early birthday present (still more than three weeks away but who cares?). They are for my ‘cool’ (as opposed to ‘hot’ rather than any attempt to be some kind of trendy, with-it gardener) bed and so are in various shades of blue and purple with a few pinks and whites thrown in for contrast. I’m hoping to have the chance on Saturday to put them in the ground.

And the allotment? Well, I’ve had some wonderful thoughts from Muppet and Al and I have been thinking a lot myself too. We’ll probably get ourselves down there tomorrow after work. In the meantime, I’m revising my plans, slowing my timetable and having a good old rethink.

The sun is out again now, so it’s back to pootling I go.

Congrats on your bedding plants and the start of your one month long birthday! I always used to use my birthday as an excuse to get college friends out for a drink, even though it was two weeks after. They used to oblige every year, and I’ll be forever thankful to them for that.

Your wormery sounds wonderful. I’m most jealous, although I have been considering getting a ladybird grow kit, which i imagine might hold a similar fascination. Just water, add a little fertilizer, and there you have it - 6 million ladybirds.

Yes, the wormery is great, though I’ve had some problems with it - chiefly due to siting (it got a bit waterlogged) and overestimation of how much my original worms could munch through. I’ve done lots of aerating of the semi-composted material (a truly disgusting job) and added extra card/paper and now worms so hopefully it will work a bit better.

And thenyou go and mention ladybird grow kits! How fantastic! I’m sure Owen would just love me to get my hands on yet more crawly things. Mind you, 6 million seems excessive, even with the amount of aphids we have!
