Pumpkin Soup

a weblog with an allotment attached

31 May 2005

And when Bagpuss went to sleep…

I got up at 5:30am today!

Regular readers (and there are some of you out there!) will remember that I’m not at all good in the mornings and so this is a big achievement for me. What’s more, this is the second time this month I’ve done it!

And what have I been up to in the glorious morning sunshine? Working hard at my plot, communing with nature and feeling virtuous? Well, no. I had to get up at this time in order to catch an early train so I could go and do some work at the place where I’ve got this new job, even though I don’t start until the end of June. Confused? Yep. Me too. But then, I’m the one who got up ridiculously early.

I had intended to pop down to the allotment for a bit once I got back this evening, but I’m pretty tired (no!) and I’m trying to rest at least a little before I go out for dinner this evening with a friend. So much for the quiet life.

Not to worry. Yesterday Owen and I finished sheet mulching the final triangular bed which I’m using to try out the three sisters method of planting. I’ve no idea how well it will (or won’t) work, but since pretty much everything else we’re doing is an experiment, it seems a bit late to get cautious now! In went my sturdy sweetcorn seedlings as well as some Neckar Gold climbing french bean seeds and some Gold Bush courgette seeds - something of a golden theme for this bed.

Oh dear, I shouldn’t have mentioned bed. Yaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwnnnnnnnn.

It’s official - working is an anti-allotment activity.

That’s an early start… yup, work is definitely an hindrance when there’s time outside to be had!

I’ve recently come across something along the same lines as the ‘three sisters’ idea myself, so I’ll be interested to see how you do (I’m planning to try it next year). I’ve also read that lettuces are good to grow amongst corn, as the shade helps keep them a bit cooler and prevent bolting. Another experiment to try :D
